Our annual Angel Island Regatta, which began in 1978, took place on a sunny November 6th. Gordie Nash officiated was the grand master and guided 15 rowers around the Island . The ladies took the lead with Diane Davis, Kellee McDonald and Mary McLachlan taking 1st-3rd places in the singles… Extra points to John Sanger who came up from Santa Barbara to participate. We lucked out with the weather, tides and most importantly with incredible potluck dishes. As Gordie said it was a ‘fast short course’ with wonderful vittles and post race hashing. We hope to have some pictures for you soon. In the meantime, here are the official results. Congratulations to all the participants!

Our series of social events at the Sausalito Yacht club have been a popular and fun way to enjoy the company of fellow rowers and meet new friends. The next event will be a Wine Tasting on Sunday, Oct. 30 from 2:30 to 5:00 pm.

We will be tasting of a variety of unique and quality wines at the beautiful SYC, on the water, on what we expect will be a typically beautiful fall day. The warm weather is really here, after our brief bit of rain last weekend, and with it some of the best rowing conditions of the year. The tides are also friendly; a moderate flood early in the week, a mid-morning slack tide by mid-week, and a moderate ebb for next weekend.

Be sure to reserve boats during these busy times, and remember that we change our hours to a 7:30 am opening next weekend.

Written by Michael Roberts, the piece profiles several familiar OWRC regulars.

THIS IS A STORY OF ADVENTURE that ends with a gold medal and glory. Along the way there is the hubris of youth, friendly porpoises, and a moment of true terror.

It begins on a commuter ferry one morning last summer in the middle of San Francisco Bay, where I spotted two rowers gliding past Alcatraz in what looked like collegiate racing shells. My first reaction: Holy crap! The bay is a wicked place for boating, with swirling currents, menacing fog banks, and winds that regularly blow 20 to 30 knots. The water temperature hovers around 55 degrees. There are great white sharks. It’s not a place for small open-cockpit craft—or so I wrongly assumed. A minute of smartphone Googling led me to the site of the Open Water Rowing Center (OWRC) in Sausalito, just north of the city. Apparently, folks there have been charging around in modified shells for 25 years.

So here’s yet another reason to read this great magazine, and pass it on to friends (and even strangers!). Let them know that, as Michael says, “Rowing (is) an easier pathway into the local fraternity of badasses.”

Mornings this week will experience an unusually weak ebb current, so this is the perfect time to go exploring around Angel (if you are qualified). This is also a great time to take a clinic, especially the Confidence Course offered this Sunday. Learn recovery techniques while the air and water are warm!
