2023 Angel Island Fall Classic

The Open Water Rowing Center and the Sausalito Yacht Club co-hosted the OWRC Fall Classic Angel Island Row for its inaugural row on October 29, 2023. The eight-mile rowing event circumnavigated Angel Island with the start and finish line at the Sausalito Yacht Club.

The weather for the event was near postcard-perfect for San Francisco Bay. Mostly calm waters with favorable currents and very little wind, despite a forecast that called for a gusty, windy event. To the relief of all rowers and event organizers, the wind never materialized.

Following the event, the rowers, board and staff enjoyed a social gathering and luncheon at the Sausalito Yacht Club that included OWRC guest speaker, Sharon Weinbar, USRowing Board of Directors Western Region Representative and Treasurer.

18 boats entered the event. One entrant bowed out due to illness, one could not participate due to an injury. Sixteen boats (18 rowers) kicked off the event – including two Maas Doubles, two coastal 1x’s, 2 Maas Flyweight’s, 5 Maas Aero’s, and 5 Maas 24’s. All 16 boats and 18 rowers finished the event.

It was not the OWRC’s intention for this event to be a race, but rather a community of rowers enjoying a challenge and an adventure together in an organized manner. With all of the boats on the water covering an identical course, however, it quite naturally became a race for many of the participants. Our emcee, OWRC member and Sausalito Yacht Club host, Lynne Miller, called the results, but noted he’d like to see bigger numbers of participants next year. (Will do, Lynne!)
