At Open Water Rowing Center we don’t always choose our conditions. Thankfully, our 2nd Annual Angel Island Regatta on October 6th kicked off with incredible weather. There were well over a dozen rowers in single sculls, 2 doubles, 2 stand-up paddleboards and one very stable pontoon rower. The sun was already warming things up at the starting line at Sausalito Yacht Club; and the racers were joined by safety boats helmed by Little Jon and Brandon. All in all it was smooth "sailing." Everyone finished safely!

Sometime while she was in art school, Kellee Adams started rowing in an 8-person whaleboat. For the unfamiliar, whaleboats are big, heavy wooden boats based on lifeboats from the 1930s and 40s. The boat Kellee competed in was named “Renegade,” and it was sponsored by local beer great Anchor Brewing.

If not for the San Francisco Chronicle, Liz Kantor might never have rowed on the bay. This was around 1988. Her friend read an article announcing a new rowing center opened by Shirwin Smith and said: Let’s learn to row.
Personal Impressions – Launch of the World's Toughest Row
OWRC Board President, Wayne Aleshire, visited the fleet of open-ocean rowers entered in the 2023 Pacific World’s Toughest Race, the day before and the day they started their journey from Monterey, CA to Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. He took the time to write down and share his thoughts and observations for our first OWRC blog post.
